MINI has been keeping a tight lid on the second-generation electric Cooper, set to make its debut this year. However, a recent sighting in Los Angeles during an official photoshoot may have given us a sneak peek at its design. The 2024 MINI Cooper was captured by bystanders without any camouflage, revealing its complete design.

The photos showcase an electric model believed to be the Cooper SE trim. It features larger oval headlights positioned above a clean and minimalist front fascia. The grille is slightly larger compared to the outgoing Cooper SE. At the rear, the car boasts new triangular-shaped taillights, albeit smaller in size, with the iconic Union Jack pattern still visible when lights and brakes are activated. Additionally, vertically oriented reflectors are integrated into the outer edges of the bumper. As expected, the 2024 MINI Cooper electric variant will not have exhaust pipes.

The upcoming electric MINI Cooper will be offered in two versions: E and SE. The base model will deliver 181 horsepower (135 kilowatts) with a 40-kWh battery, providing an estimated range of 300 kilometers (186 miles) based on WLTP testing. The SE model will offer more power with 215 hp (160 kW) and a larger 54-kWh battery, extending the range up to 400 kilometers (249 miles). However, the actual range for US models may differ based on EPA testing.

Despite its electric powertrain, the new MINI Cooper will retain its signature size, measuring 3860 mm (152 inches) in length, 1435 mm (56.5 inches) in height, and with a wheelbase of 2525 mm (99.4 inches). The electric variant will only be available as a three-door hatchback, following the pattern of the previous model, although a limited-run convertible special edition has recently been introduced in Europe. MINI has confirmed that the top speed of the upcoming EV will not be limited to 93 mph (150 km/h), although they have not disclosed the exact figure. They also plan to release a fully electric John Cooper Works version, expected to have more power but potentially lower efficiency. The JCW model is anticipated to launch in 2025, later in the vehicle’s life cycle, while the regular electric hatch will be available for purchase in the coming year.

The new MINI 3-door electric, codenamed J01, will be manufactured in China by Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture between BMW Group and Great Wall Motor. Its official debut is scheduled for the third quarter of the year at a car show in Germany, and enthusiasts can anticipate seeing it at IAA Munich in early September.
