General Motors (GM) Electric Vehicles to Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers

Following Ford’s recent announcement regarding its plans to offer access to Tesla’s Supercharger network and integrate Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports into its vehicles, General Motors (GM) has made a similar move.

GM, based in Detroit, has revealed its intention to provide charging capabilities at 12,000 Tesla Superchargers to owners of its electric vehicles throughout North America, starting in 2024. Additionally, starting the following year, GM will offer built-in NACS ports in its vehicle models. This integration of Tesla’s Supercharger network will supplement the existing 134,000 chargers available to GM EV owners through the Ultium Charge 360 network, which consists of chargers from seven different providers.

Similar to Ford’s approach, GM vehicles will require an adapter to use Supercharger cables and undergo software updates starting in 2024 before the NACS ports become a built-in feature. GM also plans to offer adapters for NACS-enabled vehicles to utilize CCS fast-chargers.

GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra emphasized the company’s vision of an all-electric future, aiming to produce millions of high-quality EVs across various categories and price points while establishing an ecosystem that accelerates mass EV adoption. Barra stated that the collaboration with Tesla is a crucial aspect of their strategy to expand fast charger access for customers and move the industry closer to a unified North American charging standard.

GM’s vehicle apps and mobile apps will feature Tesla’s Supercharger stations as soon as the NACS adapters are introduced in 2024. The automaker is taking steps to seamlessly integrate the network into the overall charging experience for EV owners.

This collaboration signifies Tesla’s commitment to opening up its Supercharger network, aligning with predictions from industry observers who anticipated the company’s transition towards making its proprietary standard available to others. By doing so, Tesla aims to generate income and prevent its connector standard from becoming a minority in the midst of widespread CCS chargers.

As EV adoption rates continue to rise, the Supercharger network has the potential to transform from an exclusive perk for Tesla owners to a widely embraced charging standard, further supporting the growth of the electric vehicle industry.
