The upcoming LCI updates for the BMW 4 Series signal a significant transition for the brand, hinting at the beginning of a new era. BMW is gearing up for a major shift towards electrification, with plans to introduce the Neue Klasse chassis across its lineup. The refreshed 4 Series, including the coupe, convertible, Gran Coupe, and M4 variants, will undergo the LCI update. Recently leaked spy photos provide a glimpse of the upcoming BMW M440i LCI and its anticipated design changes.

One noticeable update will be the new headlights, featuring a design reminiscent of the latest X5 LCI. The angular lighting elements, replacing the previous hexagonal dual-halo LED lamps, offer a modern aesthetic while deviating from BMW’s signature dual-halo character. The heavily camouflaged test mule prevents us from discerning finer details of the front end, although the iconic large kidney grille appears to remain unchanged. We can only speculate about potential alterations to the grille insert or surrounding trim until the M440i sheds more camouflage.

Moving to the rear, the taillights maintain a similar shape to the previous model, lacking the enhanced depth and dimension seen in the new 3 Series and X3 LCI. Although the lighting elements underneath appear to be improved, the absence of more pronounced changes is somewhat disappointing.

Inside the cabin, expect a few revisions, including the introduction of the new iDrive 8 system with its curved dual-screen setup. This means the physical climate controls will be replaced, aligning the 4 Series with other models like the 3 Series LCI, BMW i4, and 7 Series. Additionally, the traditional shift lever will be substituted with a toggle switch, mirroring the design seen in the updated 3 Series LCI and other new BMW models.

Regarding mechanical changes, the BMW M440i is expected to retain the B58 inline-six engine, delivering 382 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque, and featuring a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. However, the rear-wheel drive variant of the M440i is likely to be discontinued due to lower sales figures. Consequently, the M440i will be exclusively available as an all-wheel drive model moving forward.
